Building began in 1176 and is still going on. This is a splendid oasis of peace surrounded by green pines and by the sea. It goes from the top of a hill down to the beach.

The view from here at night, or during the day, is magnficent. You can see the quarries where Michelangelo got his marble for his statues in the Apuan Alps.
