History in Albenga

Edit This

Albenga was a "Roman" castrum, but a small village was here before them. The Imperial Roman Age was for the city of Albingaunum the most important - part of it is today shown along the "Via Julia" - period until the barbarians partly destroyed the town at the end of the 4th century. It was then rebuilt by the general Costanzo in order to face medieval struggles. Monasteries were founded to control the Saracens and the nearby territories, making so the town and its Bishop of a great importance. It was independent until the total submission to the Republic of Genoa took place in 1251.

The town followed then the historical events of Liguria: after a short period of Napoleon's conquest, it was annexed to the Sardinia Kingdom in 1815 and in 1861 in the Kingdom of Italy. After important works of land reclamation of the plain, finished in 1913, Albenga lived a progressive increase in prosperity and nowadays it can be considered one of the most remarkable agricultural and tourist centers of the Liguria region.
