Here the word derived from two Greek words city and dead is absolutely accurate. The site was planned on identical principals to those used by the estruscans for cities for the living.

There are 'streets' and 'houses carved out of the tufa. Several hours could easily be occupied if you take a torch and you are fit. [There is a lot of going up and down to explore the site properly and it covers about three kilometres.
