Things to do in Udine
Edit ThisUdine is the largest city in the Friuli area of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, or Venetian arc. It is less than 40 kilometers from the border with Slovenia, and it boasts views of the Alps' foothills and the Adriatic Sea. Udine things to do include dining on local specialties, taking in the area's rich history, and admiring hundreds of years of architecture.
Colle de Castello (Castle Hill)
The history and artistic heritage of Udine are consolidated in the Castello, which was built in 1511 after an earlier building was destroyed by an earthquake. The Museums and History and Art Galleries are housed together in one building. In addition to the museum's art and historical collections are the 16th century architecture, including the parish church Chiesa di Santa Maria. Neighboring Slovenia can easily be seen from the hill.
Diocesan Museum and Tiepolo Galleries
Noted 18th century painter Giambattista Tiepolo had several of his earliest works commissioned in Udine. Many of his works are housed in the museum at the Piazzo Patriarcato. Other frescoes by Tiepolo may be found in the Cathedral of Udine and in the Chiesa della Purita, where he and his son collaborated.
Piazza Liberta
The piazza contains buildings and structures such as Torre dell'Orologio (Tower of the Clock), which resembles the clock tower in the Piazza San Marco in Venice, and the 15th century town hall, Loggia del Lionello. On the roads surrounding the Piazza are buildings from the 15th to 18th centuries and the former site of the town's public executions.
Nonino
Since 1897, the Nonino Family has operated a distillation in Percato, 13 kilometers south of Udine. Products such as grape, honey, and fruit distillates are made using the original process. The primary product, grappa, is made from distilling grape pomace. Nonino is open only during the fall months and only by appointment.
Local Cuisine
Udine has several well-known restaurants that feature local specialties in traditional settings. Near the Piazza Duomo is Hostaria all Tavernetta, which offers rustic dining with ambiance. Stroll down the winding streets to Osteria Al Vecchio Stallo, where a guest may feast on area delicacies in the former stable building.
Udinese Calcio
For a less traditional tourist attraction, attend a Calcio game. The soccer (football) team plays in Italy's highest league, Serie A. The team plays during the spring and summer months at the Stadio Fruili in Udine.
