Beaches in Udine
Edit ThisUdine, Italy, the historical capital of the Friuli region, is a town well known for its rich history, flavorful wine and great food. The town boasts great sights and attractions, including the historic castle at the center of the town, a locally loved football team, numerous festivals and fairs, and great shopping. Located just above the northern tip of the Adriatic Sea, Udine is also a quick drive away from some of Italy's best beaches. Once you've taken in the sights of Udine city proper, pack a picnic lunch, grab a bottle of wine, and head down to the beach.
Laguna Di Marano
The western side of the Adriatic Sea's north end is occupied by the Laguna di Marano. The sky blue waters of this lagoon have made it popular coastline, despite occasionally muggy weather. It is a great place to spot migratory birds coming across from central Europe, and the lagoon is home to two nature reserves that are well worth a trip. Also worth visiting is the city of Lignano, a young city with a great nightlife. Marano, a very old town and an active fishing port, is home of many interesting historical buildings such as the Millenial Tower, a watchtower that pre-dates the Middle Ages.
Laguna Di Grado
Immediately to the east of Laguna Di Marano lies Laguna Di Grado, slightly smaller and with many more naturally occurring islands. This area is home to some interesting historical discoveries from the Roman era, including a first century cargo ship and remnants of the Roman system of highways. The lagoon is home to the Island of San Pietro d'Orio, an island which has been inhabited since the time of the Roman Empire, in which you can still find the ruins of an ancient Roman Temple. The nearby town of Grado, which resides on the spit of land at the southeastern edge of the lagoon, is a popular seaside resort town. Here you can find the Basilica of San'Eufemia and Santa Maria delle Grazie, the Barbana Sanctuary, and more modern amenities, such as a large water park, spas, and of course, some top-notch beaches. Grado is a also a great spot for wind-surfing. Bring your own gear or rent at one of numerous shops in the city. Less than an hour south of Udine, Grado is a great place to come for a relaxing day of sun.
