Bars and Cafes in Udine

Edit This

Udine, a beautiful city in the Friuli region of Italy, is a quiet place to spend a few days strolling through wide cobblestoned streets, each packed with quaint cafes, bars, and gift shops.  This small city has yet to be affected by mass tourism, and thus the cafés and bars, all moderately priced, are still run by local chefs and feature locally-grown food. The gelato stands will be most crowded in the summers, but still worth a visit to cool off. Be mindful that not all of these restaurants take credit cards and some are closed during siesta hours, but Udine has plenty of ATMs.

Serving mostly beers and sandwiches, I Poimbi is perfect for the hungry hiker wanting a quick snack. The daily sandwich menu varies, but always feature a chicken, beef, and vegetarian option. Pair up your lunch with a local beer on tap. Service can be a little slow, but on the whole reviewers have enjoyed Udine’s best hole-in-the-wall. Closed Mondays.

Osteria Al Vecchio Stallo, a moderately-priced traditional Italian restaurant located in the center of Udine, features a variety of delicious options, including raviolis baked with spinach, fruits, and cheese and sprinkled with cinnamon.  Unorthodox diners might like to try a plate of cow’s knee, something you won’t find anywhere else in the country.  Order wine by the glass or the bottle from the local vinery, and don’t miss out on the mouth-watering desserts and custards. Be sure and stop by the ATM on your way here; Osteria doesn’t accept credit cards. Closed Wed.

For those who still have room in their bellies, check out the simple yet tasty dessert menu. The food is appetizing, but most tourists come here for the jazz music and local beer.
