Edit This
Rimini history has it that the Romans founded the colony in 268 B.C. at the mouth of the river Ariminus, and hence its name. Rimini and the nearby city of Riccione are the most famous seaside resorts on the Adriatic Riviera in the Emilia-Romagna area in Italy. Rimini is also the capital of the province of Rimini.

A Look at History of Rimini

Rimini was based at a road junction that connected central and northern Italy and was seen as a point of defense against the invading armies from Gaul. It also helped the Romans to take over the Padana Plain in their own conquests and further helped the trade by sea and river. The Gauls had, however, dominated that area since the sixth century B.C. and had ceded it to the Umri in 263 B.C., allowing the Romans to convert it into a Latin colony and act as a bastion against the Gauls. Rimini was involved in the civil wars during Roman times but remained faithful to Caesar who crossed the Rubicon and made his famous appeal to the Forum of Rimini. Rimini was fortunate to get the attention of Roman Emperors like Augustus and Hadrian and this is when the monuments that include the arch of Augustus, Tiberius Bridge, the amphitheatre and the church of San Stefano were built. The Goths conquered Rimini in 493 and it was gifted to the Holy See in 735. A number of famous Rimini families battled for the control of the city until the Malatesta family gained an upper hand in 1239 and retained their dominance until 1528. It was then made into a secondary town of the Papal States and the commerce of the town was dominated by the fishing industry. Bathing establishments were first established in 1843 and became a symbol of the town. This greatly helped to establish the tourist industry, which even today is the mainstay of the town’s economy.

Modern Rimini

World War I and II took heavy tolls on the town and it became a primary target for opposing forces. It was finally liberated in 1994 and the subsequent redevelopment has lead it into being one of the biggest tourist attractions in Italy. Modern day Rimini is a resort on the Italian Riviera that has over 1000 hotels. It is popular among Italians as a place to go for sun and the sea and the people are known to be very friendly. The dominating Italian presence in the city has led to it being a center for very fine food and wine.
