Top 5 Must Do's in Naples
Edit ThisNational Archaeological Museum
Arguably the best of the many great museums in Naples, the National Archaeological Museum houses Roman art, frescos, sculptures, mosaics and more. Many of the artifacts on display have been taken from the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. While the museum is filled with amazing exhibits, you may want to read up a bit on the history of the aforementioned cities, as some of the descriptions in the museum can be vague.
Location: Piazza Museo Nazionale Hours: 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. (closed Tuesdays) Cost: 6.50 Euros Phone: +39 081 440 166
Mt Vesuvius, Pompeii & Herculaneum
Although not actually in Naples, you can't visit the city without taking a quick trip up to Vesuvius and the destroyed cities at its base. You can drive most of the way up Vesuvius and walk the last little bit to the summit crater, but it's best to avoid the winter when the weather may impede your ascent. Pompeii and Herculaneum are fabulous sites where you can see the ancient amphitheatres, frescos, baths, fountains and even plaster casts of some of the people who died in the AD79 eruption.
Hours: 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cost: 10 Euros
Sansevero Chapel
Formerly known as the Chapel of Santa Maria della Pieta, this chapel was built in 1590. It houses many incredible works of art, most of which were commissioned in the 18th century and created by famous Italian artists. The most famous of the sculptures is the Veiled Christ statue, which was finished in 1753.
Location: Via Francesco de Sanctis Hours: 10 a.m. to 5:40 p.m. (closed Tuesdays) Cost: 6 Euros Phone: +39 081 551 8470
Castel dell'Ovo
The Castle of the Egg is the oldest castle in Naples, and commands a fabulous view of the city from its position on the harbor. Check the schedule of events before you go, as exhibitions and concerts are frequently held on location. Otherwise, you can tour the various rooms and even the dungeons.
Location: Via Eldorado 3 Hours: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Phone: +39 081 795 4593
Piazza del Plebiscito
This beautiful Italian square is enclosed on one side with the domed church of San Francesco di Paola and on the other with the Royal Palace. Both of these are incredible structures that deserve a walk through. If you have time, you can even head to the nearby Castel Nuovo to view the frescos and silver and bronze statues.
Royal Palace Hours: 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. (closed Wednesdays) Cost: 4.20 Euros Church Phone: +39 081 764 5133
