Lemon tree near Napels

Lemon tree near Napels

Hans-Peter Harmsen

During your Naples trip you will surely want to try the famous Neapolitan pizza and other local specialties. That is indeed a very smart choice also for tight budgets, as in most Naples restaurants you will not spend more than €8,- for a pizza and a beer.

The food front: The most naturally Neapolitan dishes are vermicelli (small pasta) with clams, mussels, smaller shellfish, ziti (a type of pasta) with ragù (meat sauce), Italian style fritters, fritters of squid and mullet, steamed polyps or oven-baked lamb.

Without question, pizza is the symbol of Naples. Naple restaurants are known worldwide for this genuine and delicious dish. However, in Naples the pizza is different: whether because of the delicious odor in the air, in the oil, in the flavor of the water, or for the simplicity with which it is made, it is certain that in Naples "pizza" has a special flavor.

The city is also famous for sweets that change with the seasons: struffoli (cookies with Strega liqueur, honey, and candied sprinkles), pastiere (cakes made with ricotta, coarse flour, candied fruits, and orange syrup), zeppole (cookies made from black cherry liqueur, fried or cooked in the oven, for St. Joseph’s Day), cassatae (cake made from ricotta cheese, almond paste, and pieces of chocolate), monachine (in English, "little monks"), sfogliate rich with cream and layered high, frolle (sweet crumbly pastry made from flour, egg, butter and sugar), babà (made with light flour), eggs, and yeast and bathed in rum punch), millefoglie (layers of sweet cream and thin pastry shell), mimose (Angel Food cake, known in Italian as pasta di spagna, with cream).

These delicious sweets are always accompanied by coffee or flavored liqueurs such as rosolio, limoncello or nocillo - the latter is walnut-flavored.

Pizzeria Sorbillo

Pizzeria Sorbillo

Via dei Tribunali

This pizzeria is my favourite one, their tradition goes as back as 1935, they are now at their 3rd generation. The most expensive pizza on their card costs 10.000 lire, and is something for when you are really hungry. It is likely that you will have to queue a bit before finding a free table (give your name to the person who waits the table he/she will put you on the waiting list). It is however less crowded than other famous pizzeria's in the neighbourhood.

Trianon al Cippo a Forcella

Edit This

It is very close to Michele, just before Michele the street splits in a V-shape. On one branch there is Michele and on the other branch, a bit further you will find Trianon. It is a tree floor pizzeria and each floor has it's own wood-oven. The pizza is good, the price normal and as the place is no big there is almost no queue.

Da Michele

Edit This

This pizzeria is in a very popular neighborhood, very close to the Central Station and Piazza Garibaldi, in a side street of Corso Umberto. There is quite a lot to queue but it is the cheapest pizzeria in Naples. Don´t expect any luxury however, you will get you flatware, plastic cups and you have to set up the table youself. The card is only made up of two of sort of pizzas, Margherita and Marinara. Margherita is the default, if you want Marinara you will have to ask explicitly for it. It may also happen that you will have to share the same table with perfect strangers. It more..
