Ischia sights are a combination of some of the most breathtaking and historical sights. This island has definite historical and geological appeal. Apart from being home to some really therapeutic mineral springs, it has some places which absolutely need to be visited.

The Arogonese Castle

This is interesting both historically and geologically. It has a continuous history since about 474 BC, when a fort was first built on this location. It is also built on rock which is called the dome of stagnation. This rock is nothing but magma which was a result of a volcanic eruption. You have two ways to get to it. One is a mule track and other is a lift. While this fort was built by the Greeks, specifically Hiero I, it has passed from the Greeks to Romans, Visigoths, Vandals, Ostrogoths, Arabs, Normans, and then Swabians, so it has some serious history to it. You need to visit the Immaculate Terrace which offers a great view of the beach, the hills, and the village of Ischia Ponte. The visit to the church of the Immaculate is warranted. The convent of St. Mary and the Nuns Cemetery is next. The Story of Nun’s cemetery is quite macabre but certainly very interesting and may have a strong theological and spiritual point to it. The Belvedere Convent should be on the list to visit and then perhaps a break at the Monastery book shop and Café. The Cathedral of the Assumption and the crypt would complete your trip to the castle.

La Mortella

William Walton and his wife Susana created this beautiful garden. It is a landscape garden with over 800 species of plants. This was created on the foot of Monte Zaro inside a stone quarry. There are a lot of other things here such as the Thai Sunhouse along with a steel fountain. It has cascades and pools. It also hosts concerts. It definitely is a very good setting for a musical or an opera.

Museo Archeologica Pithecusae

If you have seen the Castle and know its age and history, you definitely need to visit the museum. With a history which actually starts three centuries before the castle was built, there is a lot to see at this museum in Lacco Ameno. All of what you see has great stories to go with them. For example the Cup of Nestor is here with a poem inscribed on it.

You will certainly have a lot of fun in Ischia with the thermal springs and the beaches, but the story of this place will come with these sights.
