Top 5 Must Do's in Capri
Edit ThisCapri is a beautiful place to visit and has some remarkable things to see. To start you off, here is a list of 5 of the best things to do or see on Capri.
Mount Solaro
"Conquering" Mount Solaro should definitely be on your list of things to do. The trip up by foot will take about an hour for those who are reasonably fit. For those who prefer to sit back and relax on the way up, consider riding the chairlift to the top. You'll find the ticket center at the Piazza della Vittoria. From the top of Mount Solaro you'll have a fantastic view of Anacapri and the Gulf of Naples. It's definitely worth the trip, whether on foot or not. If you're lucky, you'll catch the church of Santa Maria a Cetrella open. The best chance of this is to head up on a weekend in May or September.
Villa San Michele
The Villa San Michele is the historic home of Axel Munthe that is built atop Roman ruins. The architecture of the present building was selected by Munthe, but follows ancient Roman standards. The entire villa is open to the sky and the sea, just as Munthe wanted it. You can roam the fantastic gardens and search out the remains of the old buildings and the old church. Roman sculptures decorate the area as well. The villa offers a fantastic view of the sea.
Villa Jovis
Located on Via Tiberio is the Villa Jovis, the largest ancient Roman villa on Capri. The building was originally a fort built in the 1st century and still contains the remains of Roman baths. It's located 1200 feet up Mount Tiberio and affords a gorgeous view of the sea. You can also visit the church of Saint Maria del Soccorso. The villa is open daily from 9 a.m. to just before sunset.
Green Grotto
The green grotto is not as famous as its sister, the blue grotto, but it's infinitely better. You can rent a kayak from Punta Carena if you're more adventurous and want some privacy, or you can easily find a willing boatman to take you there. Once you enter the caves in the green grotto you'll be amazed at the green, luminous lights. If you can swim, it's definitely worth taking a dip into the waters and swimming through what appears to be a liquid emerald.
Punta Carena Lighthouse
If you head to Punta Carena to catch a boat to the green grotto, then definitely make time after your water and cave adventures to explore the area when you return to land. Located on Punta Carena is the second most important lighthouse in all of Italy, and seeing its sweeping lights at night is definitely worthwhile. Explore the rock formations and fort ruins on Punta Carena in the early evening and then settle in for a fabulous sunset and view of the area by night.
