Day Trips in Ramsey

Edit This

Due to its location in the Irish Sea between the UK and Ireland, there are many day trips available from the Isle of Man. Also there are many museums and other places of interest to visit. The island itself is quite small, 50 kilometers long and 20 kilometers wide, and as such can be easily explored.

Curraghs Wildlife Park

Near Ramsey, this is the only wildlife park on the island and it is said that a person can travel around the world in 80 minutes here.

Basking Sharks

Why not take a boat trip around the island to see these peaceful and plankton-loving sharks up close and in their natural habitat. Trips leave from various points along the coast of the island although both Douglas and Ramsey bays are very popular.

Ayres Nature Reserve

This is a sandy area which has been created from sandstone cliff erosion in the north of the island and is open all year round. Please note that the reserve is only accessible by car and has no public transport links. This is a wonderful place for bird watching and whale, shark and seal spotting.

Calf of Man

Just off the southernmost point of the island sits the Calf of Man, which is a protected nature reserve. During the summer months, regular boat trips operate to this very sparsely populated area from the mainland.

Peel

Peel is the only city on the island and is situated on the south west coast. Peel Castle is situated across the causeway from Peel itself and is the only castle on the island made from sandstone.

House of Manannan is a museum of both the past and present of the island and houses a replica Viking longship.

Leece Museum relates specifically to the history of Peel.

Vintage Transport

The fantastic positive that connects each of the vintage transport options on the Isle of Man is that each service finishes within easy walking distance of the next and therefore a full day out or 2 can be spent exploring in this manner.

The steam trains run from Port Erin to Douglas with many stops along the way. Disembarking at Douglas, one can catch a horse tram which will take you from the Sea Terminal, along the promenade, finally stopping at the Electric Railway Station. From there a visitor can follow the coastal line along to Ramsey and then onto the Snaefell Mountain Railway that takes you up to the highest point on the island and its breathtaking views and scenery.

The Isle of Man TT

Probably the most famous event on the island is the TT, a yearly motorcycle race, that has been held every summer for over 100 years.
