Highlights in Cork
Edit This Blarney Castle
Nestled in the charming village of Blarney is one of Cork ’s greatest treasures. Built nearly 600 years ago, Blarney Castle is known the world over for the famous stone that has been a must see attraction for any visitor to Ireland over the past 200 years! In 2006, the Discovery Channel listed kissing the Blarney Stone amongst its 99 things to do before you die! Today, more than 400,000 visitors pass through the castle gates every year in the hope to receive the ‘Gift of Eloquence’.
The Blarney Stone is believed to be one half of the stone of Scone , which was given by Robert the Bruce to Cormac McCarthy in 1314 for his support in the Battle of Bannockburn. World statesmen, literary giants and legends of the silver screen have joined millions of pilgrims who climb the towers steps to kiss the stone. Once upon a time, visitors had to be held by the ankles and lowered head first over the battlements. Today, Blarney Castle are rather more cautious of the safety of there visitors. The Stone itself is still set in the wall below the battlements. To kiss it, one has to lean backwards (holding on to an iron railing) from the parapet walk. The prize is a real one as once kissed the stone bestows the gift of eloquence.
Rock Close & Blarney Castle Gardens
However, in addition to the most famous stone in the world, the Blarney Castle estate also offers visitors the chance to stroll one of the country’s most spectacular gardens, enjoy a picnic by the lake or explore the Rock Close – a mystical place where majestic yew and oak trees grow around an ancient druidic settlement. Here, visitors will find a dolmen, sacrificial alter, a Druids circle, a Witches Kitchen and wishing steps, fairy glade, boardwalk, waterfalls and much much more!
Maybe we should not be surprised at how eloquent so many of our visitors become. For many of them, however, it is not the Stone but Rock Close that so moves them. Landscaped around many timeless features in the eighteenth century, this is truly an enchanted spot. Where better to spend a day exploring this enchanted and magical wonderland!”

Opera House
Edit ThisThe Opera house is a nice building. Situated next to the Crawford Art Gallery, it is visible from Patrick's Bridge (the main bridge leading out of the city from the main thoroughfare, Patrick's Street). Recently renovated, it has a vastly improved facade in a pseudo-modern style.

Blackrock Castle
Edit ThisIt is perhaps a little ironical that the most complete building of its type in the County of Cork, and incidentally one of the city's best known landmarks, is not truly a castle at all. As is evidenced by the commemorative stone on its entrance gateway Blackrock 'Castle' was built by the Corporation in the earlier part of the 19th century. The original 'Castle' is indicated as having been a fort, erected by Lord Deputy Mountjoy in 1604 as much to defend himself against the citizens of Cork - who had showed rebellious inclinations the year before when they refused to acknowledge more..

Glen Park
Edit ThisFormed from a disused quarry, this northside amenity features plenty of walks, and a variety of ponds, within which an astonishing array of wildlife has taken residence. Be sure to bring a loaf of bread with you to feed the ducks - in the springtime you'll be entralled by the sight of young ducklings swimming about. A wonderful oasis of peaceful countryside in an increasing urban sprawl. Situated just south of the Ballyvolane shopping centre. Take the No.7 bus from the city centre and ask for directions to it.

Bishop's Palace
Edit ThisSituated within the traditionally working class area of Guarranabraher (locally just called "Grawn"). It's visible from the opposing hills of the Glen. Bear in mind that this "palace" was in use during the 30s by the Catholic hierarchy, when the surrounding areas were nothing more than squalid slums and desparately poor. A testiment to inequality and religious power gone mad.

Saint FinBarre's Cathedral
Edit ThisStands where the saint established his monastic school about 650 AD. A place of worship for 1,350 years, and around which the City of Cork rose. Many Corkonians has never seen the inside of the Cathedral, because (as an Anglican church) we were (until recently) not allowed by the catholic hierarchy.
The standing cathedral dates from 1870 as triple-spired example of French-gothic architecture. Among its most striking features are the fine rose window, the mosaic pavements and the elaborate carving throughout. History at: more..
