Edit ThisThe Rock is a remarkable outcrop of limestone rising 200 feet above the plain and crowned with its magnificent group of ruins. This place was the seat of Munster kings from about 370 until 1101, when King Murtagh O'Brien granted it to the Church. St Patrick, on visiting it in 450, baptised King Aengus and his brothers here. Brian Boru was crowned King of Munster at Cashel. On its grant to the Church in 1101, the rock was dedicated to "God, St Patrick and St Ailbhe". Cathedral
Edit ThisThe Cathedral is a cruciform building with a central tower and at its west end a massive residential castle three storeys high. Its high set lancet windows are characteristically thirteenth century. The wrought work of the chancel windows is in yellow sandstone, contrasting with the limestone of the rest of the building. Cormac's Chapel
Edit ThisThe Chapel hastwo towers rather like transepts at the junction of the nave and small chancel, storeys of blank arcading within and without, string-courses and a barrel vault with transverse arches. Although the chapel has features of European origin, its high pitched roof of stone and the corbel principle are distinctively Irish in conception. Hall of Vicars
Edit ThisThe fifteenth century Hall of the Vicars Choral is seen on entering the modern gateway at the head of the inclined way which approaches the rock enclosure from the south. This building, an extensive structure in two parts of two storeys each, housed laymen or minor canons appointed to assist in chanting the cathedral service. St. Patrick's Cross, in the green inside the entrance gate is a unique form of Irish cross.
