Edit ThisDating from the 13th Century, the Castle dominates the town and was central to the Siege of Athlone in 1691. Built in 1210 by John de Gray Bishop of Norwich, for King John of England. From 1569 - 1672 it was headquarters of the Presidents of Connacht.
Occupying the old guard house, our modern tourist office caters to the needs of visitors to Athlone and the Castle. Apart from offering information and a room reservation service, the Tourist Office has a wide range of literature and souvenirs to suit all tastes. Clonmacnoise Monastic Site
Edit ThisThe remains of the ancient ecclesiastical site of Clonmacnoise, South of Athlone, are among the most extensive of their kind in Ireland.
Clonmacnoise (the Irish Cluain Mhic Nois means the meadow of the sons of Nos) was founded in 548 by St. Ciaran the son of a wright or master craftsman. The Manager Locke's Distillery Museum
Edit ThisOutside of town but worth the trip. Lockes Distillery Museum is "believed to be the oldest licensed pot distillery in the world" Licensed in 1557, Lockes produced triple distilled Irish whiskey for over 200 years. Today it is the last remaining example of a small pot still distillery in Ireland. Guided/ self-guided tours bring you through the original distillery buildings, following the process from the grinding of the grain to the casking of the final product.
