Skaftafell national park Travel Guide
Edit This The best resource for sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, what to do and seeSkaftafell National Park is just off the ring road (Route 1) between Vik
and Hofn. There are lots of trails and it is home to
Skaftafellsjokull glacier. A good trail and an hour hiking takes
you to Svartifoss waterfall. It is one days hike to go to Morsajokull glacier, to Skeidarajokull glacier or to Kristinartindur.
In a two day glacier hike, the highest mountain of Iceland, Hvannadalshnukur, can be reached.
The visitor centre (open in June thorugh September) has interesting displays including video of the 1996 glacial burst floods (caused by a volcanic eruption under the glaciers) of Skeidararsandur which wipped out roads and bridges in the area.
There is a camp ground near the visitors centre. Food and maps can be bought there.
