"Hotels are going to be rather pricey, like most things in Iceland" is certainly true for the KEF Int. Airport area. However, Internet look-ups for "Keflavik budget lodging" generally show two propositions to choose from: B & B Guesthouse and Motel Alex. B & B Guesthouse has slightly cheaper rooms, Alex has the advantage of being located in walking distance from KEF Int. and staff offering more extended traveler services.
