When to Go in Budapest

Edit This
A beautiful city in any weather, Budapest has a climate that varies quite dramatically over its four distinct seasons. While the country does not see the extreme high and low temperatures of many of its European neighbors, it does offer very different experiences to visitors depending on the time of year that they visit. Spring and summer offer a varied schedule of cultural events and the chance to enjoy some wonderful outdoor bars, while autumn and winter see the city at its quietest.

Summer Sunshine

During the summer, the sun shines brightly over this city of two halves (Budapest averages close to 2,000 hours of sunshine per year), but temperatures tend to hover around the 20-25 °C, rarely reaching the stifling temperatures that can make sightseeing uncomfortable. The hottest months are July and August, and these are the busiest months for tourism in Budapest. The summer also sees the opening of Budapest’s famous garden café-bars, makeshift constructions that spring up in the courtyards of disused buildings across the city. Lively, colorful and fun, these bars are often hidden away but are well worth seeking out.

Spring Spectaculars

Temperatures in the spring tend to be mild but chilly, and the skies are generally clear although April showers are always a possibility – bring an umbrella and lots of layers! The onset of the warmer weather is celebrated in late March with the Budapest Spring Festival, the biggest event on the city’s cultural calendar. With opera, chamber music performances, jazz, ballet, contemporary dance and theater, the festival draws culture vultures from across Europe, and accommodation is best booked in advance during the week of the festival.

Colors of Autumn

Autumn in Budapest is beautiful, with the warm sunshine continuing well into September before crisp days and chilly evenings begin to set in in late October and early November. The leaves of the city’s many trees turn stunning shades of orange, gold and brown, and the hen and stag party hordes that head to the city during high summer are conspicuous by their absence.

Winter Wonderland

Budapest in the snow is a stunning sight to see, and snowfall is a real possibility in the winter months of December, January and February. Wrap up warm, and head out to see the city transformed into a winter wonderland Taking a dip in the city’s famous indoor thermal baths is a wonderfully relaxing way to escape the chill.
