Museums Around Stoupa

For those visiting Stoupa, museums may be found in nearby Kalamata and Diros, which are easily accessible. There are also several settlements around Stoupa which are like living museums.

Kalamata Museums

The city of Kalamata is located about 30 kilometers northwest of Stoupa. Various buses and taxis offer transport to this destination, and you will probably arrive there in less than an hour. All Kalamata museums are concentrated in the same region and have a distance of less than 200 meters between each other, so you can easily pay a visit to all of them. There are Archeological, Military and Folklore museums. A bit further away is the Kalamata Railway Museum, which is undoubtedly the most interesting one in the city. It is situated inside a real railway station and shows passenger carriages from the end of the 19th century.

Diros Museum

The Diros Museum is located by the Diros Cave near the town of Pyrgos Diro, also about 30 kilometers from Stoupa to the south. The museum exhibits prehistoric artifacts found in the cave, including various ornaments, decorations, pottery, tools, weapons and even whole human skeletons, all of them dating from the Neolithic era. The Diros Cave was home to an evolving community of prehistoric settlers. Except for its resident area, it also had a workshop, storage room and even a cemetery. It was abandoned due to an earthquake around 3200 BC.

Agios Nikolaos

Agios Nikolaos is a picturesque little fishing village, located about 2km south of Stoupa. It is very calm and peaceful place, covered by tiny old houses and surrounded by lush green gardens. Some of the houses still have their rusty stone walls. Most of the buildings here were erected in the early 20th century and the village itself is really like an ethnographic museum, because the locals have preserved the same way of living all over the years and up to this day.

Kardamili

The village of Kardamili is located 6 kilometers north of Stoupa and is a real historical museum, with a partially preserved medieval castle and a fully preserved Byzantine chapel. Experiencing these sights will carry you back in time. It will be something that you will never forget.
