Sights in Greece

Edit This
Greece is a historic place with abundant museums and architecture testifying to the ancient glory of the country. The list of Greece Sights includes the following must-see places:

The Parthenon

Situated on the hill called the Acropolis, the Parthenon of Athens is considered to be one of the world’s greatest cultural symbols. Dedicated to the Greek goddess Athena, the temple was completely made of marble with about 23 columns supporting the structure. The temple was once decorated with several sculptures including a huge gold and ivory statue of the goddess Athena. Most of the sculptures are now exhibited in the British Museum and other precious items are displayed in the Acropolis Museum in Athens. Built in 432 BCE, the ruins of this temple still carry the glory of ancient Greece.

Theater of Dionysus in Athens

The Theater of Dionysus was an amphitheater built in 325 BCE during the heyday of the Greek civilization. It had a sitting capacity of 14,000 to 17,000 spectators. Named after and dedicated to the god of wine and fertility, this temple staged the plays of eternally famous Greek playwrights like Sophocles, Aeschylus, Aristophanes and Euripides. The theater was unused for about 3 centuries until it was renovated by the Roman emperor Nero. This theater features the amalgamation of both Roman and Greek heritage.

The Temple of Olympian Zeus

The Temple of Olympian Zeus stands in the middle of the Greek capital Athens. Dedicated and named after the king of Greek gods, Zeus, the construction of this temple began sometime in the 6th century BCE and was completed almost 700 years later during the rule of Roman emperor Hadrian. This temple stood 40 feet tall with about 25 pillars propping up the structure. The temple survived multiple barbarian invasions and natural calamities which left the structure denuded of its former beauty. However, the remnants of this giant temple still draw the crowd of tourists.

The National Archaeological Museum

Considered to be the largest museum of Greece, the National Archaeological Museum boasts of its rich collection of over 20,000 exhibits which will provide you the panoramic view of the Greek civilization from its prehistorical era to late antiquity. The museum has 5 discrete sections including the Prehistoric section, the Sculptures section, the Vase and Minor Objects section, the Metallurgy section and the Egyptian and Eastern Antiquity section. Each section showcases different relics and artifacts of ancient Greek heritage.

Panathinaikon Stadium

Panathinaikon Stadium in Athens is the only stadium in the world completely made of white marble. Constructed in the 4th century BCE, this open air stadium has the seating capacity for about 70,000 spectators. Located in downtown Athens, this stadium was renovated and rebuilt several times. In 1886, the first modern Olympic Games were held here. The stadium also hosted the opening ceremonies of 2004 Olympic Games. On some occasions, though rare, the stadium houses musical events and performances.
