Beaches in Santorini

Edit This

Santorini is a group of islands off of the Greek coast. Although Santorini is know for volcanic eruptions, the islands themselves being formed by volcanoes, this has made for some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Perhaps not as popular in the party scene as Mykonos, Santorini has a thriving nightlife and is becoming one of the most sought-after tourist destinations.

Perivolos Beach

On the island of Santorini sits Perivolos beach. This is the longest "black beach" on the island, entitled so because of the black pebbles that make up the ground. Almost any water sport you can think of can be done off of this beach from jet skiing to windsurfing. Buses and taxis can both take you to Perivolos. The beaches Perissa and Agios Georgis will be found on either side of Perivolos and, though they have different names, they are connected with no barrier.

Monolithos

If you just can't wait and go to the beach closest to the airport, take a look at Monolithos beach. This may not be the absolute best beach in Santorini due to the strong winds, but that makes it less populous. This beach also has a basketball court and a play area for children. There are beach chairs set up all along this beach so all you have to do is bring your bathing suit and a towel. Monolithos also sits near the beach Kalamari.

Kalamari

Kalamari is a black beach close to Monolithos beach, on the opposite side of Santorini as Perissa beach. A mountainous rock named Mesa Vouno juts up from the shore of Kalamari and out into the sea. Kalamari village lines the beach so you can also get a taste for the Greek architecture as you walk along the cool beach. Water sports are also popular at this beach, so you will not be at a loss for activities, and there are beach chairs set up along the water that you can lounge in while you take in the scenery.

The Red Beach

The Red Beach is likely the most well known beach of Santorini. It is a mystic yet small beach and attracts many tourists due to the large mountain-like mounds of red and black volcanic rock in the background. Because of the color of the sand, it is very hot to walk or sit on, so it is best to wear sandals and there are chairs equipped with umbrellas to get a little cooler. In the distance, you can see where the red sand turns into tan, thus forming the next beach.
