Anastenaria
Edit ThisThe ritual of Anastenaria takes place every year, at May 21, in the village Agia Eleni. It is a ritual of great religious and folkloric importance. The anastenarides, the men and women who participate in the ritual are a special part of the community. The word anastenaris means the person that suffers and sighs. The anastenarides constitute a special "battalion" of believers, equivalent to the ancient holy theatrical companies dedicated to the worship of Dionysus. Elepftheria
Edit This"Elepftheria", the festivities commemorating the liberation of the city are held every year at June 23. At June 23, 1213, the Greek army entered the city and liberated it from the Bulgars. The "Eleptheria" include a series of cultural events organized by the municipality of Serres. The festivities culminate at June 29 with a grand student and military parade
