You can take in the unbelievable natural wonders of Kavala, as well as archaeological sites, ancient buildings, historical locations and modern architecture...all in one trip.

Kavala Archaeology

One of the most important Greek archaeological sites is located just a short distance from Kavala. It contains the ruins of the ancient city of Philippi. The city was founded in 356 BC, and was a fully inhabited and functioning city until the 14th century when it was abandoned. You can still walk through the city's empty streets and feel the ghosts of Philippi's heyday. Out in the Aegean Sea, on the island of Thassos, are a various archaeological sites as well. Crumbling walls and the bases of former homes and buildings grace the island, giving it a mysterious and ancient feel. Thassos also has amazingly clean beaches, friendly people, great wine and delicious, high quality honey. The giant marble factories on Thassos are also an interesting sight to see. The marble on this island is shipped off to cities all over the world.

Castle of Kavala

Built in the 5th century BC, this famous castle is the most important landmark in Kavala. Its original purpose was to defend and protect the city of Neapolis, as Kavala was formerly named. Since that time, the castle has been rebuilt several times and expanded to serve a variety of other purposes.

Archaeological Museum

Kavala is also home to an excellent archaeological museum. It contains thorough collections from prehistoric times through the times of Neapolis, as well as artifacts of Amphipolis. The adult entrance fee is only 500 drachmas per person, and there are student and senior discounts. The museum is closed on Mondays.
