Board a Cruise to the Island of Samothraki at Kavala

Kavala is an excellent starting point for many Kavala Cruises. Most popular destinations include the nearby Greek islands of Thassos, Samothraki and Lemnos. You should definitely consider boarding on the cruise to Samothraki, as the island offers some marvelous sights, and seeing them will be definitely worthy.

The Trip

The trip to Samothraki starts at the Kavala harbor. There are regular boats serving the route twice a day. You can either leave early in the morning or later in the afternoon. The cruise itself lasts no more than 4 hours, so keep in mind that taking the late boat may mean that you’ll have to stay on Samothraki for the night. The trip is very pleasant and you’ll have the chance to admire the lovely waters of the Aegean. Approaching Samothraki will also give you some magnificent mountain views.

Arriving at Samothraki

Reaching the island, your boat will dock at Kamariotissa – the main port of Samothraki. Kamariotissa is a small settlement consisting of lovely little white houses. There are some nice restaurants and souvenir shops around that you should visit, but the main attraction of the island is located 5km west of Kamariotissa. This is the so-called "Sanctuary of the Gods," or "Paleopolis" (as the locals call it). The Paleopolis is a definite must-see. The most famous artifact here is the 2.5-metre statue of the goddess Nike, which is a truly marvelous sight.
