Sights in Katerini
Edit ThisKaterini Sights are something that you do not want to miss. There are a few, but they are of great significance. Katerini is a small town but it is near some very significant places, one being the mythological mountain of Olympus. It is near the biblical city of Thessaloniki (the second largest city in Greece) and some other very significant archeological areas. It also is near the beach of Paralia which you should definitely go and see.
The City of DionDion is the oldest city in Greece, dating back to fifth century B.C. The name means “of Zeus,” and the city was built in the honor of this Olympian god. It has temples dedicated to Zeus, Isis and Demeter. Dion was also supposed to be the starting point of Alexander the Great’s campaign to conquer the known world at that time. The ruins themselves now lie within the modern municipality of Dion. You cannot help but feel the history of 2,500 years when you are at this place. Dion is about 17 km away from Katerini.
Mount OlympusYou will get a very warm feeling being in the village of Litohoro. It is a small community, but has a significant connection to the mythology of Greece. Mount Olympus is mentioned to be the abode of the gods and significantly the abode of the king of gods, Zeus. The village is a resort of sorts and, if you are into mountaineering, you may have some options available here. This is about 20 km away from Katerini. Mount Olympus is not just a mythological excursion, but you can actually go for a hike onto some of the peaks of the mountain. You do not actually need technical expertise in mountaineering for some of the trips, though some of the higher peaks will require a certain degree of skill to get to. In all, Mount Olympus has about 52 peaks. It is also home to a diverse number of species of plants and birds. There is no doubt that you will certainly call this trip heavenly.
Paralia BeachParalia Beach is a place to see some aquatic sights that you probably will not find in too many places. Scuba diving off Paralia Beach opens up a view of the sea life which is truly remarkable. You will most definitely find octopus over here. If you like digging a little bit, you will find hermit crabs hiding in the sand. There are also seahorses that cling to the shore. Paralia Beach is the place for some good underwater photography as well.
