Day Trips in Katerini
Edit ThisExperience Greek Mythology on a Katerini Day Trip
Katerini day trips will not be complete without visiting the archaeological site of the ancient city of Dion. Katerini is a town in northern Greece and the capital town of the Pieria prefecture. It is a popular tourist destination due to its coastal location and great archaeological interests.
Archaeological Site
One famous tourist attraction in Katerini is the ancient city of Dion, which is an archaeological site located about 20 kilometers from the town. This archaeological site has revealed priceless finds dating way back to 1100 BC. The most astounding find is the city of Dion itself, where you can glimpse centuries' old sanctuaries, basilica, tombs, theaters and other edifice.
Archaeological Museum
Nearby is the archaeological museum of Dion. The excavated artifacts have been moved and showcased inside this museum to protect them from theft and deterioration. The museum was primarily established to display the artifacts found from the excavation. You will find artifacts as old as the 6th century BC to the 5th century AD. Sculptures, vases, urns, jars and statues are some of the pieces in the museum. One key artifact is the water organ, or hydraulis. Although water vessels are commonly excavated items in Greece, the own displayed in Dion is thought to be the oldest water organ ever excavated in the world.
