Accommodation in Kalamata
Edit This
Kalamata is still refreshingly undiscovered by the bulk of
international holidaymakers, but its status as a popular destination
for Greeks looking for a beach break means there are plenty of
accommodation options to choose from. From welcoming little guest
houses to vast hotel complexes, there are choices to suit all tastes,
budgets and types of traveler.
There are a handful of good hotels and bed and breakfasts by the beachfront and in Kalamata town center, but the more lavish and luxurious accommodation tends to be found in the countryside surrounding the town itself. With regular buses and taxis that are plentiful and inexpensive, making your base outside the main town needn't mean missing out on sightseeing or nightlife.
Kalamata Center
There is a scattering of good hotel options in the historic center of Kalamata, among the best of which is Hotel Rex, at 26 Aristomenous Street. Housed in a fine neoclassical building, this five-star hotel has been fully renovated in recent years and now features all modern conveniences as Internet access, cable television, a hairdresser, cafe bar and a decent-sized pool. The hotel's two suites both offer spa baths and panoramic views, and there are good conference facilities for business travelers. The location is great for sightseeing, and the beach is within walking distance. Despite its five star status, the hotel is not prohibitively expensive, and there are some good off season deals to be found.
Those who don't have a five-star budget, or who are just looking for something a little more cozy, the Hibiscus Hotel at Faron Street is a welcoming, inexpensive option just a few hundred meters from the beach. This fine 19th Century building has a leafy courtyard perfect for evening drinks and nibbles, along with air conditioned rooms and a tasty breakfast.
Out of Town Options
Many of Kalamata's larger hotel and apartment developments are located outside of the city center, and the pleasant countryside that surrounds the town makes the perfect setting for some wonderfully tranquil accommodations, set in lovely gardens.
A good example of this is the Akti Taygetos Resort at Mikra Mantineia. Just five kilometers from the town, this lavish resort features a mammoth pool and sits right next to a quiet rocky beach. A cocktail bar and spa treatments help guests slip into holiday mode, while there are good conference facilities for business guests.
Holidaymakers who want to indulge in a truly special break should consider splashing out on a night or two at the luxurious Classical e Filoxenia Hotel, at the edge of Kalamata town. Set in lush gardens, with indoor and outdoor pools, tastefully furnished rooms and a good on-site restaurant, this is a great spot for a romantic couple's break in Kalamata.
