Family Travel Ideas in Greece
Edit ThisGreece family travel is much easier than you might think, especially because the Greek culture embraces children. You will find that most accommodations, restaurants and attractions welcome children and families. You can find great historical sites, beaches, ruins and more that everyone in the family will find fascinating.
The Beaches and Waterparks
There are many great beaches in Greece. You can find beaches with beautiful white sand, huge waves for surfing, cold water beaches and warm ocean beaches. Many times after work or school is finished the kids come and gather on the beach. This can be a great place for your kids to interact. Many beaches offer paddle boats and other equipment. There are also several water parks in Greece and during the summer when it is very hot you want to spend a few hours in the afternoon to cool down.
The National Park in Athens
If you are tired of the city of Athens then spend an afternoon in the National Gardens in the center of Athens. The park has swings and a jungle gym. You can also sit by the pond and feed the ducks. There is a small zoo where you can see animals such as birds, goats and deer. There are also some ancient ruins just sitting around the park which is always a bit of a surprise when you come across a piece of ruins.
Ancient Ruins
You should not miss the ancient ruins in Greece. The Acropolis is the most famous spot in the entire country. It is more than 2000 years old. Acropolis translates into “high city." The Parthenon is a building in this “high city” that is huge. Many of the statues in the acropolis are actually replicas because the pollution in the city was damaging the statues. The originals can be found in the museum. Below the Acropolis is the Agora, or the old marketplace. The Temple of Zeus is near Hadrian’s arch. The arch was once the entrance to the city of Athens and the temple is the largest of its kind and was never finished.
The Islands
There are many islands in Greece. If you visit Sifnos then make sure to have an almond cookie that the island is famous for. The island has a great beach as well as many churches you can visit. The oldest city on the island is Kastros, a great place to explore.
Poros is the closest island to Athens that can be easily reached by ferry. You can visit an ancient temple to Poseidon at the top of the island. The island also has some stunning beaches.
