When to Go in Crete
Edit ThisCrete's weather is characterized by four seasons, but also has a wet and dry period. The mountains at the center of the island create a marked difference between the north and south and also the east and west. Generally, the south and the east of the island are warmer and drier than the north and the west.
Winter
Winter is perhaps the best season to visit the cities for those who aren't particularly fond of the beach. There are very few tourists around in the winter. Just be prepared for extremely changeable weather - most of it cold and rainy - and you'll be fine. December is one of the most temperamental months as far as weather is concerned. Some days are warm and sunny, some are cold and rainy, and still others are extraordinarily windy. If you're going to be in the south it's still possible to swim this month. January is generally bleak, cold and rainy, with February getting warmer and drier. Those cold and rainy days can still creep up, however, so be prepared this entire season with warm clothes and umbrellas. Also, for those who prefer the mountains, keep in mind that a good deal of snow falls in this area in the winter. Roads are often closed due to excess snowfall.
Spring
Spring is a lovely time of year for anyone who doesn't like extreme temperatures. It also happens to include the celebration of Greek Easter, a wonderful time to visit Crete and experience a bit of culture. March carries a bit of the cold and rain of winter, but many of the days are sunny and the weather gets warmer-so much so that a few hardy swimmers will brave the sea. In April the moderate temperatures and low amount of rainfall give way to beautiful spring flowers. May is warm and sunny with calm seas that are perfect for swimming and water sports. Be sure to bring a jacket or sweater for this season, as nights can still be chilly.
Summer
Summer is the peak tourist season in Crete, with hot sunny weather beginning in June. Once July and August hit, the north winds will begin to blow, making the sea choppy. The temperature will average between 30 and 35 degrees C, so be sure to drink plenty of water when you join everyone in the search for shade on the beach. Keep in mind that children may have a hard time swimming on days when the wind is high. If you don't like crowds, perhaps it's best to avoid the summer altogether.
Autumn
Autumn is generally beautiful with weather similar to the more moderate springtime. September is still sunny but with cooler temperatures and winds that have died down to a gentle breeze. October is usually sunny with very little wind, though there can occasionally be a rainy day, usually in the west. November once again brings mixed weather similar to December, but with a south wind that carries with it its own nuisance: sands from the Sahara desert. In November the sand can cover the sky, causing strange weather patterns and sometimes irritating the lungs and eyes. Still, the early months of autumn are popular for hiking and other outdoor activities.
