A Rethimno Travel Guide is the best way to optimize your next visit to this beautiful city by the sea in Crete.

Getting There

You may travel to Rethimno by only air or ferry as the city is located on the island of Crete. The ferry departs from Athens daily, but it is an early departure. Air travel is also available from either Chania Airport or the larger Heraklion Airport.

Once in Rethimno you can get around on foot, public bus, or by hailing a taxi.If you choose to hail a taxi however, be aware that it is customary to share a ride with a nearby stranger if they're headed in the same direction you are.

Things to See and Do

Rethimno pairs history with the common tourist beach crowd to make for one fantastic vacation. You can spend one day lounging on white sand beaches and the next exploring ancient ruins dating back to before 3000 B.C. Either choice offers a vivid travel experience.

Beaches

Sea turtles also call Rethimno home, and if you time your visit accordingly by coming in late July to early August, you just may see turtle eggs hatch and watch newborn turtles flap their way back into the sea. Nature aside, these beaches are truly beautiful. Many resorts offer all-inclusive dining and drinking packages to tourists. Just off the beach you will find many typical tourist shops selling the typical tourist garb. For more authentic and better-priced items head farther inland. The region features amazing olives and wines if you find the right store. Your hotel receptionist should be able to point you in the right direction.

History

The Fortress in town was built in the 1570s by the Venetians. The fortress is still in tact and offers today's visitors sweeping sea views and a great meeting place to explore other features in the old town. You should also allow time for a visit to the archeological museum and Venitian Loggia. Exhibits here date to Roman times and there is a Minoan goddess statue that is not to be missed! An interesting stop is at the Folklore Museum. There are more than 5,000 items on display here with many dating as far back as the 17th century. The area is also rich with craft shops where local merchants sell their handmade goods.

Carnival

A large festival held in late February until sometime in early March, this event features beautiful and bright costumes and a parade with vibrant floats.
