Ierapetra is a city that sits on the southeastern coast of Greece's largest island, Crete. The population of Ierapetra is 15,323 (2001) whereas the municipality of Ierapetra has a population of almost 24,000. The city is actually known to be the southern-most town in Europe. Ierapetra dates back to the Minoan period, sometime between 2700-1450 BCE. Since these times, Ierapetra has played a key role in the popularity and history of Crete. Today the city is separated into the old town, Kato Mera, and the larger, newer portion, Pano Mera. Ierapetra has mountains, hills, beaches and forests making it a very visually diverse destination.

What to See

Kales is a large castle that juts out into the sea and is said to have been built in 1212 by a Genoese pirate. Today it is a hallmark site of Irapetra. There are many breathtaking churches in the city including the Church of Afentis Christos and the Church of St. John. There are also still some Byzantine churches such as the Chapel of Agios Georgios and Agios Haralampos. 8 miles south of Ierapetra sits the uninhabited island of Chrissi. For a small fee, you can hire a boat to witness these beautiful and untouched beaches.

What to Do

If you like shopping, check out the main street, Koundouriotou, where you will find boutiques both small and large. There is a popular nightlife in Ierapetra boasting all styles of music. Seven Blue Notes is the oldest dance club in the city and is a popular tourist hot spot. Saxo Bar is well known amongst rock musicians. If you'd like something a bit more quiet, try one of the many cafes lining the streets of Ierapetra, such as Cafe California or Small Cafe, boasting the best espresso in town.

Where to Stay

Since Ierapetra is a practically unknown town to those outside of Greece, accommodation is affordable. The Arion Palace Hotel is a beautiful and scenic accommodation with prices starting at only $47 per night. For an extra $18, your rate becomes all-inclusive. A room in the Cretan Villa starts out at around $50 per night and each room has satellite television and wireless internet access to make you feel at home. One think you will find about many of the hotels in Ierapetra is that the style and decoration are unique to the Cretan culture.
