Nightlife and Entertainment in Corfu
Edit ThisCorfu has a reputation as something of a hotspot for partiers, and there´s certainly no shortage of places for holidaymakers to let their hair down on the island. The larger holiday resorts, as well as Corfu Town itself, are home to numerous clubs and bars. Those who like their home comforts will be pleased to note that the ubiquitous Irish bars that can be found the world over are present and correct in Corfu. However, the island does not cater solely to a young, party-loving crowd. A popular destination for families, Corfu has some decent family-friendly entertainment options, and many of the larger hotels and apartment complexes lay on their own entertainment and excursions during the peak summer months.
24 Hour Party People
Corfu´s reputation as a party island is not undeserved, and there are a number of busy nightclubs featuring big name international DJs during the summer high season of July and August. Much of the clubbing action tends to take place away from Corfu Town and towards the north of the island, while the New Port area is a major attraction for the young and fashionable. Big clubs like Hippodrome and DNA can be found here. Most of the DJ sets feature mainly US and UK chart and dance music, with a little hip hop and R&B thrown in, although there are a handful of clubs that play modern Greek music.
Family Friendly
The Greeks tend to eat out late, and music often provides an entertaining musical backdrop to a meal in a Greek restaurant. Give the kids permission to do as the locals do and stay up late (well, they are on holiday) for a meal at a traditional restaurant with music and dancing, or head to one of the several cinemas on the island that show English-language films with Greek subtitles. Those who are staying at one of Corfu´s many large resorts will often find that there´s a decent programme of nightly entertainment laid on, and there are several amusement arcades to be found in Corfu town.
Sounds of Summer
The sun-baked island of Corfu really comes to life from June to early September, when the temperatures rise and the bars, clubs, restaurants and public squares throng with people. Along the esplanade in Corfu Town, a programme of free live music events takes place during the summer high season, from the bands and orchestras of the town. Look out for Sound and Light shows, that feature impressive laser displays. In September, the Corfu Festival is a major event featuring ballet, theater, opera and a good deal more. Many events are free of charge, making September a good time to visit for holidaymakers on a budget.
