Top 5 Must Do's in Gibraltar
Edit ThisGibraltar sits on the shipping route of Spain, and has been conventionally known as a busy city. The history and geography of the city allows for a myriad of different experiences for any visitor. Here are a list of Gibraltar Must Do's.
1. Walk around the Rock of Gibraltar
The Rock of Gibraltar is the landmark of the city of Gibraltar, being a large limestone rock that sits on the southwestern tip of Europe. On the Rock of Gibraltar sits the Moorish Castle, a structure built more than 700 years ago for a Berber chieftain. About 40% of the land has been designated as a National Park, and the park itself is home to hundreds of Barbary Macque monkeys and a wide variety of exotic flora and fauna. Standing at the tip of the Rock is a wondrous experience with a view to behold as the sea and land unfold before you.
2. Visit the St. Michael's Caves
Also found in the Rock of Gibraltar are another of nature's wonders, the St. Michael's Caves. The Rock is home to a network of limestone caves, created from rainwater dripping onto the surface of the limestone and creating holes that form caves. The St. Michael Cave is one of the most impressive and definitely the most visited of the caves in this limestone network. Consisting of many chambers, it is open with guided tours to view. The largest of these chambers, in particular, has been converted into a concert hall for the purposes of rock, classical and pop concerts.
3. Chill at Catalan Bay
While in Gibraltar, visiting the beaches is a must-do activity. The Catalan Bay is one of the local well-loved, yet forgotten beaches that tourists simply must go and take a look at. In the peak season, the bay is far less crowded than some of the places that are nearer to the city and more convenient by transport. Soft sand and crystal clear waters, the Bay is a must-do for those who love the sun and surf.
4. Shop
With reduced taxes, Gibraltar is shopping haven for those coming from Western Europe. Main Street is the place to go for everything that you need, from food to textiles, electronics to handicrafts - everything is available. Those who tired of shopping can always rest at the sidewalk cafés and enjoy an afternoon in the city, before continuing on their spree.
5. Taste Local Cuisine
The Spanish flair shines through in the cuisine of Gibraltar, with many of the fine dining restaurants in Casemates Square in the Main Street area. These are slightly more expensive, although the ambiance promises to be fantastic. Those looking for something more homey can try the pubs and restaurants along the waterside, including the Queensway Quay and the Marina Bay.
