Things to Do in Gibraltar
Edit ThisWhen planning a vacation to the tiny coastal British colony of Gibraltar, you should include places on our list of Gibraltar Things to do. Known to the world as the last British colony in Europe, Gibraltar is situated on the southern part of the Iberian Peninsula.
The Rock of Gibraltar
One of the first things you want to do while in Gibraltar is to visit the Rock of Gibraltar. The rock sits atop and overlooks the blue waves of the warm strait that cuts Gibraltar from the African continent. It offers a wonderful view for leisure walks and hiking. Barbary Apes or Macaques also thrive in the area. It also has been a delightful tourist attraction as some are fed by vacationers themselves.
Gibraltar Museum
Take a trip to the Gibraltar Museum. The museum is located at the heart of Gibraltar town on Bomb House Lane. The Gibraltar museum was founded in the 1930s and keeps a significant number of historical and cultural items. Model cannons used during the battle called the Great Siege of 1779 to 1783 are on display. Turkish baths also add to the delight of tourists. The baths were recently been discovered and are considered to be in such perfect preservation they may be the best in all of Europe.
Fiesta de Los Reyes
Participate in the Fiesta de Los Reyes. Every January 5, the locals celebrate the most festive of all festivals- that is, Three Kings Festival. Dating back to 1884, the festival was started for the entertainment of kings. As time passed by, the festival has grown to have a more religious meaning and is aimed toward the three wise men who brought gifts to the infant Jesus. If you are in Gibraltar during this time, you would not want to miss this fiesta.
The Moorish Castle
The Moorish Castle is another popular place to visit while in Gibraltar. The castle itself is located atop the high Rock of Gibraltar. It is believed to have been completed by the Moorish Tarik in 742, yet little has been known over the details and history of the castle. Significant remains of the original tower depict the flag of Union Jack flying high above and visibly seen in the town of Gibraltar.
Trafalgar Cemetery
Another thing to do before leaving Gibraltar is to visit the famous cemetery of the fallen British sailors who perished during the battle of Trafalgar on October 21, 1805, which, at that time was considered the largest sea battle using sailing ships.
