Sights in Gibraltar

Though Gibraltar is sited at the southernmost tip of the Spanish subcontinent, and is a relaxing place to spend your time. Spain was once a strong military base, but then the military stronghold died down considerably. Now it’s largely considered a tourist haven and attracts huge number of visitors throughout the year. The points of attraction for the tourists are many in number, and each of them is equally fascinating.
The Famous Rock Tour
This tour lasts approximately an hour and half. It begins from the Botanic Gardens and ends at the Ape’s Den. A cable car will take you to the top of the rock. The places covered in this tour include:
Caves of St Michael – These caves are famous for all their glorious stalagmites and stalactites. The amazing part about this place is that you can catch a concert that is held deep within the caves.
The Siege Tunnels – This tunnel has a rich history. It was carved in order to defend Gibraltar from 1779 and 1783, when the Great Siege occurred. Initially, the tunnel was only 82 feet long, but after the World War II came to an end, the tunnel measured an astounding length of 30 miles. Once you enter the tunnel, you get a feel that it will go on forever.
Moorish Castle
This castle in Gibraltar is another exciting tourist spot. This castle was rebuilt in the year 1933, and is believed to be one of the largest visited tourist spots in the Spanish sub-continent. Its dominant features will simply make you awe-struck. Its fortified walls, buildings, and gates are quite remarkable. The HM Prison of Gibraltar is housed in a significant portion of the castle.
Europa Point
Being the southernmost tip of Gibraltar, Europa Point is another fascinating Gibraltar sight. When standing at the point, you can catch a spectacular view of the African coast, which lies at a close proximity of 14 miles. Here you can obtain an assortment of refreshments as well as souvenirs here. Another brilliant attraction near the Europa Point is the Ibrahim-al-Ibrahim Mosque. This architectural marvel was a gift from the monarch of Saudi Arabia, King Fahd. This building took about two years to construct, and the cost came around £5 million. The official inauguration of this building took place on August 8, 1997.
Eastern Beach
This is the most popular beach in Gibraltar. Like other beaches, this one is also sparkling clear, with azure waters and blue skies. The beach is remarkably being wide and long, and houses a number of facilities. Other beaches that you may frequent are Catalan Bay, Little Bay, and Sandy Bay.
