Festivals in Gibraltar
Edit ThisDon't-Miss Festivals in Gibraltar
Located along the Strait of Gibraltar on the southern coast of Spain, the City of Gibraltar is about a 12-hour drive from Barcelona and about an 8-hour drive from Madrid. If you want to enjoy the best Gibraltar festivals, you should visit this city during September in time for the Gibraltar National Day celebration and in March for the Gibraltar Song Festival.
Gibraltar National Day
Commemorating the first sovereign referendum of the city, this celebration is the most awaited event of the year. Held every 10th of September at the city’s Naval Ground, the celebration starts with a children’s competition and a street party where locals and visitors can enjoy Gibraltar’s finest local cuisine. The food fair is usually held at the John Mackintosh Square. The main highlights of the celebration are the colorful governor’s parade which ends up with the acknowledgment of the recipients of the Gibraltar Medal of Honor. The celebration concludes with the releasing of thousands of red and blue balloons in honor of the builders of the city and its citizens.
Gibraltar Song Festival
If you love music, you should never miss the Gibraltar Song Festival when visiting the city. Started in 1965, the Gibraltar Song Festival went into hiatus for many years until it was revived in 2007. Held during the month of March, the musical competition during the festival attracts hundreds of song writers and performers from different countries around the world. During the festival, visitors can enjoy music in the streets as hundreds of musicians converge in the city to witness the song competition.
