Oberhof Travel Guide

Already in the 19th century, the quietness, the fresh air and the environmental surrounding let visitors come to Oberhof, located south between Eisenach and Jena. Known as the centre of the Thuringian forest, Oberhof is an ideal location for every sport fan during both summer and winter season.

Oberhof is definitely a place to do cross-country in winter. There is a place to do downhill and snowboarding even at night. A special event for everybody is the possibility to go down the toboggan track called the ice canal. For unstable weather conditions, you have the chance to visit the Oberhof - winter sport exhibition, which is really interesting and worth a visit.

Not only the pro athletes do competitions in Oberhof. In May and even in winter now, the greatest Cross - Country run takes place called the "Rennsteig-Lauf". It is a competition whereby everybody can try himself and test his conditions.

In summer the Rennsteiggarten Oberhof is a precious little place to be. All through the year, from May till October, upon an area of 7 hectare, 4000 different species of plants from all over the world can be viewed. The festival of blossoms even became tradition. It is the last weekend in June and the fall festival in September.

Enjoy to see the "Schneekopf" (978m) - the 2nd highest "peak" of the Thuringian Forest and only a few kilometers away from Oberhof - a favored destinations for hiking.
