Museums in Saarbrucken
Edit ThisVisit the Museums in Saarbrucken
Saarbrucken, as the capital Saarland, is where most of the major attractions and Saarbrucken museums are located. Going to these museums will give you a unique perspective of Saarland and how the city developed.
Saar Historical Museum
The Saar Historical Museum opened in 1988 and traces the history of Saarland from its turbulent past to its hopeful future. It explains about the Nazi period, the Gestapo and the First World War. The museum features a detention cell used by the Gestapo. Further back in time, it also explains how a Renaissance palace was built inside a medieval fort. There are several audio and video presentations as well as pictures relating to the everyday life of the Saarlanders. Domestic chores are portrayed over time, explaining how they managed to cook and clean in early years. Visitors should keep in mind the Museum is closed on Mondays.
Saarland Museum
Whereas the Historical Museum focuses on the past, the Saarland Museum puts emphasis on the dynamics of contemporary art and how it was used in Saarland. The State Gallery displays the important contemporary pieces of Saarland artists. In the Old Gallery, a collection of traditional paintings and art and crafts can be seen which traces back to the Middle Age and 20th century. The museum also houses in a collection of French and German Impressionist painters’ works. Like the historical museum, it is closed on Mondays for maintenance.
