Family Travel Ideas in Saarbrucken
Edit ThisStrolling with the Family in Saarbrucken
Don’t be deceived by its industrial front, the Saar Region has space for some Saarbrucken family travel. The town of Saarbrucken itself was the economic and industrial center of the Saar Region. It is where most of the major factories for coal, machinery, iron, steel, sugar and beer were once seen. There are still lots of nice places to see with the family, though, amidst this industrial jungle.
Visit a UNESCO Heritage Site
A few kilometers from Saarbrucken is Volklingen. There are big ironworks that cover about 15 acres or 6 hectares of land. This is a well-preserved work from the 19th century. This is the only known intact ironwork from either Europe or North America. It was founded in 1873 and became a certified heritage site in 1994. There, one can take the kids on an educational excursion or maybe even a spontaneous picnic while you stroll through the huge expanse. It now has some multimedia displays and a museum to cater to tourists.
Treat the Family to Schwenker
Schwenker is a specialty steak cooked in the unique way of the Saarland. It has an open grill which is placed over the fire with the grilling rack swung over the meat. Depending on the budget, there are several affordable, mid-range and expensive restaurants to choose from that serves Schwenker. Va Piano and Grand, the Asia Restaurant offer affordable deals with an accompanying beer. For kids, you can take them for dessert at Café Kostbar which has nice outdoor seating for people watching.
