There are not many Saarbrucken beaches that you will find located right in the city. However, there are several rivers that you can go to which are near Saarbrucken’s city center.

Potato Island

The main beach area situated right in Saarbrucken is the Potato Island. This local beach is situated next to the Bismarck Bridge, which is on the banks of Saar River. Potato Island is one of the favorite destinations by both locals and tourists. It features fine sand with rows of palm trees on the shore. There are several amenities on this beach including lounge chairs, umbrellas and a bar. Most of the facilities in Potato Island are free. However, Potato Island is only open from May to October from 11:00a.m.onwards.

Saar River

Saar River is the main focal point of this green city. The river is often the main hub of water sport activities in Saarbrucken. The river portion in Saarbrucken is often the starting point and destination of most houseboat tours. These tours begin in Saarbrucken traveling to the Moselle and French channels of the Saar River. Boat tours are not uncommon in Saar River, and many locals and tourists live in houseboats. There are also several rental companies along the Saar River, where you can rent a rowboat, paddle boat, canoe or motor boat.

Moselle River

Located within the state of Saarland next to Saarbrucken is the Moselle River. The river is 545 kilometers in length that stretches to France and Germany. The Moselle River runs through Cochem, Koblenz, Bernkastel-Kues and Trier towns in Germany. Just like Saar River, Moselle River is a main hub for boating tours and water sport activities. You can go on a boat cruise on the Moselle River, which travels to France and Luxemburg. Along the Moselle River, you can see numerous old castles and vineyards.

Blies Right Tributary (Blies River)

Next to the district of Saarbrucken is the district of Neunkirchen where the Blies tributary resides. This major tributary of the Saar River flows from 3 springs in the Hunsruck mountains. This tributary is approximately 100 kilometers long. The Blies River flows through 2 major districts in Saarland including Neunkirchen and Sankt Wendel, and the town of Blieskastel, which is one of the cities named after the river.

Prims River

Another major tributary of the Saar River near Saarbrucken district in Saarland is the Prims River. This 91 kilometer river also comes from the Hunsruck Mountain and flows into the Saar River in Dillingen, which is a town in the district of Saarlouis.
