When to Go in Trier

Edit This

The oldest city in Germany, Trier, is located along the western border of Germany. The climate in the area is very mild due to the effects of the North Atlantic Drift. Summers stay quite cool, while winters are generally mild, with temperatures hovering around freezing. Humid winds come into Trier from the west all year round keeping the average percentage of humidity rather high. The climate is classified as a temperate seasonal climate. There are 4 distinctive seasons, and rainfall is common in practically every month, with the most occurring in July and August.

Seasonal Activities

In Trier, the main attractions are historic monuments and structures. The Roman sites like Porta Nigra and the amphitheater are probably the most popular, while the museums, such as the Diocesan Museum, the Toy Museum, and the Rhineland Museum are tourist favorites as well. The churches, like St. Paulinus´s Church, the Church of Our Lady, and the Basilica, are impressive and should not be missed. All of these historical attractions can be visited in any season without problems. However, during the summer is best because the weather is at its warmest and most pleasant, and walking from building to building is an enjoyable treat, not just a necessary, uncomfortable experience. During the summer, relaxing, romantic strolls along the Moselle River are common as well, enjoyed by both tourists and locals. Biking and hiking are nice summer, outdoor activities, too. The average temperature in July is around 18 degrees C.

It winter, attractions, other than skiing and snowboarding, are somewhat limited. Many museums and historic sites close early, although admission fees are often cheaper. Walks through the town can feel bitterly cold, so it´s much more difficult to explore and enjoy Trier. Additionally, most outdoor activities are nonexistent at that time of year.

Tourist Season

The weather is definitly best in the summer, but the best time to visit Trier is actually during spring and fall, March to May and October to November. Temperatures are cooler and more unstable than those in summer, but there are fewer tourists, as the Trier tourist season lasts from late May to September. In spring and fall, prices for attractions and events are cheaper, and the area is less crowded. Temperatures range from about 6 degrees to 15 degrees C and rain is less probable than it is in summer. The weather is not perfect, but it's still much better than it is in winter.
