Festivals in Trier

There are number of Trier festivals that celebrate the culture and history of this great city. Following is a list of events that you can attend if you are in this ancient city at the same time.
Brot und Spiele
Also known as the Bread and Games festival, this is the most popular Roman event held in Germany and it usually takes place in the month of August. It celebrates the way people lived during the ancient Roman times. This festival usually lasts for two days and is held at two important monuments in Trier; the Imperial Baths and the Amphitheatre. While the former is used to display military and civil life, the latter hosts other kinds of performances, including gladiator fights. The Brot und Spiele is an entertaining annual event which won the Germany- Land of Ideas award in 2006.
Mosel Music Festival
This is one of the biggest and most well known festivals in Germany. Around 22 towns that lie along the Mosel River participate in this festival to make it entertaining and successful. The festival includes different kinds of music from classical to blues, medieval to jazz, boogie to organ and world music. Every year, the concerts held at the Mosel Music Festival attract approximately 20,000 visitors from surrounding towns and even countries.
Trier Christmas Market
Held on the Cathedral Square and Main Market, the Trier Christmas Festival is a small and charming event that attracts both, locals and tourists. The festival is mostly held from November to December and sells all kinds of Christmas items. Numerous booths offer visitors the perfect place to do all their Christmas shopping. The most popular items for sale at this festival are nutcrackers and wooden toys. In addition to this, you can also sample different kinds of German specialties like Lebkuchen (spiced gingerbread), mulled wine, pancakes from apple kompott and potato strips and the traditional Reibekuchen.
Altstadtfest
This Old Town Festival is one of the most popular events in this town. It is usually held in the summer and extends over a long June weekend. The Altstadtfest is ideal for the entire family as it includes many different kinds of events for visitors of all ages. You can enjoy great music and a number of concerts. There are also dance groups at the Altstadtfest to make it an entertaining event. In addition to this, there are various stalls that offer different kinds of foods and sweets.
There are many other events that are held annually in Trier which are worth a visit. Some of the other popular events include the Rallye Deutschland and Wine and Gourmet Festivals.
