The typical German pub is called "Kneipe". It's difficult to explain what that means and where the difference is to the - for example - American way of bars. Most foreigners agree that it is very easy to feel relaxed and comfortable in a German "Kneipe". And Trier is full of them, nearly everywhere you will find a cosy place to sit down, have a drink and talk or discuss with people. Some time ago the Viehmarkt became a new center of the scene, especially in summertime, when all the “Viehmarkt” square is covered with tables and chairs. Here a few places that are - in my opinion - highlights of Trier's Kneipenszene:

This used to be a very popular place with the local Yuppie-scene. Not so popular anymore due to next door Barocco and the new Walderdorff cafe opposite the Trier cathedral, but still a good place for coffee and cocktails.

The (local) rich & beauty - here you'll find them. Highly recommended for very good cocktails. Special prices for certain cocktails on each days except on Fridays and Saturdays. Cocktails cost only half price from sunday till thursday. On Friday they have Black, RnB and the best Salsa Dance Party in town and on Saturday they present Housetracks with a famous DJ "Carlos" who plays excellent Deep-, Ibiza- and Dubhouse. Very cool sound. On my time in Trier I loved to stay in barocco. It´s a very stylish bar. Americans, French and other nationalities are very welcome more..

Lucky´s Luke

Outstanding! Existing since 1990 the "Luke" made it until today to be the number one in Trier and the whole region for alternative and rock. The have DJ´s every wednesday, thursday, friday and saturday. Obvisously the playe is mostly crowded on the weekend, then its opened almost untill 6. Smooth, nice and funny people... Only go there if you can stand it... but take a look for sure! It´s going to be a wild night, you remember or not anymore...

Ziegel's

One of the newer ones in an old place. And run by an old professional of the scene. Sunday's brunch is great!

One of Trier's oldest "in bars". The one with an atmosphere like the big city hang outs. Students and former students crowd. Ed: Great bar, many good nights

Walderdorff

This is currently the most popular cafe for trendy people, located opposite of the Trier cathedral. The Latte Macchiato is a must. A small, but very good menue provided by the neighbouring restaurant "Schlemmereule" is also highly recommended. josh powers: the web page is helpful. i'm going to trier as an exchange student.

Blut Tag und Nachtcafé

Formerly known as "Blaues Blut". Nice café and bar, a good place to drink.They have the most sweetest and good looking waitresses in town. But the best feature is the huge "Smokers Area" in the back. There one can sit and watch sports while enjoying a smoke and drink.

Tidligere kjent som "Blaues Blut". Hyggelig café og bar, et bra sted til å slappe av. De har Triers peneste og søteste betjeninger. Men det som er det beste er at det finnes et stort rom hvor det er tillat å røyke.Her kan en sitte og ser på sport mens en koser seg med røyk og drikke samtidilig.

Nice restaurant, crowded only in summertime when Trier's biggest beergarden attracts lots of students (you have to be early to catch a table). Be patient with the waiters, they are not the fastest ones.
