Sights in Mainz

Mainz offers quite a number of interesting sights due to its Roman 2 000 year heritage. Also the the baroque buildings remind one of the times of the Electors. The best architects and the most talented sculptors created the general character of the city in the 17th century and founded unique palaces for the nobility, as well as new churches.

Electoral Castle

The castle is an important monument of the German Renaissance era. It also houses the Roman-Germanic Central Museum

Mainz Dome St. Martin

A Roman pillar basilica built by Archbishop Willigis, and first consecrated in 1009. The leaves of the market portals date back to the llth century. The west chancel is christened St. Martin, and the east St. Stephan. For further information call +49-(0)61 31-253412.

Town hall

The town hall was built based on a design of Danish architects Arne Jacobsen and Otto Weitling. The meeting hall and foyer are also used as a forum for music, literature and exibitions.

Augustine church

An impressive grand façade between the fronts of the houses in the picturesque old town.

St. Ignatius´ Church

The building has an impressive red sand-stone facade. It has large sculpted adornments and a garden for the priests, but no steeple. The church dates back to 1297, and was built by Johann Peter Jäger between 1763 and 1774. The Ignatius quarter was named after this church. The style of its construction is considered to be classicist, and is more modern than St. Augustin's Church which was built later. The development from the rococo style to the classicist can be followed by Johann Baptist Enderle. A wooden statue of St. who belonged to the church committee, and who was buried more..

St Stephan Church

Located in the old town, where the famous artist Marc Chagall transposed the Old Testament onto the stained glasswindows in a beautiful blue colour. A magnificent work of art, which has long since become a magnet for many an astounded viewer.

Christ Church

Protestant church built in the High Renaissance style in 1895 by Eduard Kreyßig as a counterweight to the Cathedral. Protestant services: Sunday 8.30 a.m., last Sunday of the month 11.15 a.m. (university service)

The Wood and the Iron Towers

The Wood Tower was a gate tower of the city walls during the Middle Ages and was also used as the prison of the famous robber "Schinderhannes". The "Iron Tower" was built about 1240, with a Romanic foundation. It is today used as an arts' center and gallery.
