Day Trips Intro in Rhinelan
Edit ThisMosel day trips to neighboring wine areas are one of the best ways for tourists to make the most of their vacation in this popular German wine region. Most of these places are located along the 338 mile long Mosel River and can be reached quite easily.
Cochem
About 15 miles from Mosel is the picture-perfect town of Cochem. Here, tourists will find some remains of medieval city gates, defense towers and half timbered houses. There is also a huge castle in the town that is popular with tourists. When visiting this town, tourists must visit the Reichsburg Cochem, which dates back to A.D. 1000. The French had destroyed the original tower in 1689, but it was reconstructed in a Neo-Gothic style in the late 19th century and now towers over the town.
Trier
This is the oldest city in Germany and is situated on the Mosel River bank. It is located close to the Grand Duchy of Luxemburg border, about 20 miles from Mosel. Tourists planning to visit this impressive town must start out early in the morning if they want to enjoy their time here. The Roman ruins and other architectural treasures from the later periods are some of the attractions in this town. Tourists must also try the local cuisine here, which has been influenced by France.
Lower Mosel Valley
Any tourist to Mosel must make it a point to visit the lower Mosel Valley. There is actually only one main attraction here, but it is definitely worth the visit. Located here is Burg Eltz, the most stunning medieval castle in Germany. The castle can’t be seen from the river, as it is tucked away in a thick forest. Burg Eltz is thousands of years old, and certain parts have been added throughout the years. However, it remains unchanged in style. Tourists can also get a guided tour of the inside.
