Mönchengladbach is an industrial town at the Niederrhein. Although it is not a tourist destination the town does have quite a nice old center, and there is a good museum of modern art.

Among the sights of the area is the largest brown coal casting pit in Europe. It's close to Mönchengladbach next to a small town called Jüchen.
