Hagen is located in Germany in the state of north Rhine-Westphalia.  It is the 37th largest city in Germany and home to the only state funded distance education university in the country called FernUni Hagen.  This is a large school with over 55,000 students. 

Open Air Museum

Hagan is the site of an Open Air Museum called Westfalisches Freilichtmuseum Hagan. This is the perfect place to learn about the area. The museum has a collection of historic buildings where printing, brewing, smithing, and milling was done. Many of the displays are working and helps you feel like you have traveled back in time. Craftsmen exemplify work of the time in 20 workshops and will even teach you how to do some of the tasks. Werdingen castle is on the site as well. You can spend days here living in the past.    

Hotels

There are several hotels in Hagan most having TV and internet access. You can find a wonderful room in the city and right outside for $80 to $200 depending on the hotel. Many hotels have restaurants attached or nearby. Try Mercure Hotel Hagan, Deutsches House, or Elbschetel Hotel.

Restaurants

Speaking of restaurants, there are many in the city. Felsengarten features international dishes and is open from noon to 2 pm and then 6 pm to 10pm.  Bierbrunnen is an ale house that is typical in Germany. They serve only drinks and snacks and are open from 5 pm to 1 am. The most popular bistro in town is Bistro Sommerterrasse and is open 5pm to 1am. 

Outdoor Activities

Outside the city limits are many opportunities to go hiking in the beautiful forests nearby. The trails are marked well but if you desire you can go on a guided tour from the Sauerland Mountain club, which are available during the week ends. Guides will give you a history of the area and speak about the plants and animals in the forest.  Also try a guided canoe trip by Lenne-Ruhr Canoe Tour on the river Lenne with a few small rapids. Rates run about 24 EUR per person and includes equipment, guide, bus ride and soft drinks. There are family discounts. 

Shopping

Shopping in Hagen is popular with about 1300 retail outlets in town. You can get to most of them by bus or train but if you wish to drive there is ample parking. There are many outdoor markets in the city as well that are fun visit. Altenhagen is  on Swords Road between Peace road and Hermann Street on Tuesday and Saturday 7am to 1pm. Try the Ernst market at Karl-Ernst-Osthaus Street on Thursday from 7am to 1pm. 

The city of Hagen will give you a great deal to explore and offer opportunities to discover the history of the area and the present.
