Goethe Museum

Schloss Jägerhof, a Baroque palace, has been refitted as the Goethe Museum. Germany's national poet was born in Düsseldorf, just like Heinrich Heine. Mostly interesting for lovers of literature.

Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen

Lovers of painting will be more than rewarded at this collection. The Kunstsammlung NRW is housed in an ultramodern gallery in Grabbeplatz. The collection began with an act of contrition: in atonement for the dismissal of Paul Klee from his professorship at the Düsseldorf Academy in the Nazi purges of 1933, around 90 of his works were bought by the city in 1960. Klee remains the big attraction, but later acquisitions have turned the museum into a who's who of modern painting.

Schloss Benrath - Benrath Palace

In the south of Düsseldorf there is a very special sight: the important late-Baroque pleasure palace and park, unaltered original environment uniquely preserved. The castle was built over 200 years ago as a summer residence and hunting lodge for the Elector Karl Theodor. The unique ensemble of castle and park is one of the most significant of its type. Nicolas de Pigage built the castle between 1755 and 1773. The design of the chateau goes wonderfully well with its surrounding gardens and.

Ehrenhof

The Ehrenhof, constructed in 1926 for the Gesolei Fitness and Health Exhibition, is a major landmark in Dusseldorf. It si also one of the major architectural achievements of the period immediately following the First World War and encompasses the recently-refurbished Kunstmuseum (Museum of Art). The complex is a visual culmination of the Hofgarten designed by landscape gardener Maximilian Friedrich Weyhe at the beginning of the 19th century which, runs down to the riverbanks.

Altstadt

The Altstadt has made Düsseldorf world-famous. But it's not just the tempting array of food and drink, which gives this picturesque quarter its special flavour; the Altstadt also has a few churches that are worth a visit.

Kunstmuseum Düsseldorf

The Kunstmuseum has extensive displays on three floors. At ground level there's a fine collection of glass, much of it Art Nouveau and Art Deco. On the next floor, Ruben's altarpiece of The Assumption puts almost all its companions in the shade. Upstairs, there's a modern section that complements the Kunstsammlung, along with heavy stuff from the nineteenth-century Düsseldorf Academy.

Hofgarten

The largest of Dusseldorf's parks is the Hofgarten, shaped like a great stiletto-heeled shoe, now crossed by several busy streets. At its far end you find the Schloss Jaegerhof, a Baroque palace which today houses the Goethe Museums.
