Sprengel Museum of Modern Art
Edit ThisThe museum was opened in 1979 and extended in 1992. The idea of the museum is the dialog between opening and closing, between the public and the atmosphere of art. With its characteristic openness the museum has in the meantime become a place of meeting and communication. A generous donation made this museum possible. In 1968 Dr. Bernhard Sprengel gave his extensive collection of modern art to the city of Hannover and donated a considerable sum of money for the construction of the museum. The city of Hannover and the federal state of Lower Saxony agreed to finance the more..

Tiergarten
Edit ThisThe term "Zoological Garden" often used for "Tiergarten" is not quite appropriate in this case. The 112 hectares of this recreational forest are inhabited by a large number of wild animals, making it one of Hannover's most popular attractions. From the beginning it was not the production of wood, but hunting and the beauty of the wild animals and the forest that stood in the foreground. The Tiergarten was created in 1678/79 by Duke Johan Friedrich for hunting. 120 fallow deer were let free in the forest. This is approximately the number living there today. Unfortunately, Duke more..

Stadtpark
Edit ThisAt the back of the city hall is a lovely park and garden with fountains, ponds, lawns, a rose garden and works of art. The "Stadtpark" was designed in 1951 when the first "Bundesgartenschau" took place right here. Numerous attractions derive from that time, like a lot of the sculptures and a bridge leading into the "Eilenriede", the city's forest. There is also a pavilion and a japanese tea house. Visitors of the HCC who stay overnight at the "Hotel am Stadtpark" could miss this lovely park together, because they can use an underground passageway between the city hall and the more..

Eilenriede
Edit ThisVirtually a "city forest" and Hannover's true "green lung" is the Eilenriede forest. It covers an area of 650 hectares in the middle of the city, which makes it unique in the whole of Europe. Accordingly, the citizens of Hannover are very proud of "their" Eilenriede. The privilege to use and cultivate the Eilenriede as their possession, granted in 1371 by the dukes Wenzeslaus and Albrecht of Sachsen, is the foundation of its development. The forest stretches across the city, almost into the city centre. It takes its name from the alder trees (germ. Erlen or Ellern), which used to more..

The Castle of Hannover
Edit ThisOverlooking the picturesque old town of Celle lies the prominent castle. Celle became the residence of the Dukes of Braunschweig-Lüneburg in 1378, but of the medieval structures of the castle nothing has survived. Duke Ernst der Bekenner who introduced the Reformation had the castle rebuilt in Renaissance style in 1530. In the 18. century the last duke, Georg Wilhelm, who liked art, gave the castle the appearance that has been preserved until today. The walls were decorated in a Venetian manner, inside palatial rooms and the castle's theatre were built. Today the theatre is a more..

Herrenhäuser Gärten and Zoo
Edit ThisStarting from Königsworther Platz, the tour guides through the Georgengarten, a very beautiful parkway, passing the Wilhelm Busch museum, until reaching the Großer Garten. During a visit at the Großer Garten, unique baroque gardening artwork can be admired. Numerous fountains and wells can be seen between the expensively created beds and hedges; in the centre of the Großer Garten, the big fountain ejects a jet of water, several meters high, into the sky. Inform yourself about the international fireworks contest at Hannover Tourist Information. In the summer months, different more..

Old Town Hall
Edit ThisThe Old Town Hall
It was built over a period of more than 100 years. The earliest part (from 1410) overlooks the Schmiedestrasse (Blacksmith Street), the later wing next to the market was erected on the foundations of the 13th century trade hall. The adjacent wing in the Koebelinger Str. is called the "Chemists' Wing ("Apothekenflügel"), because it was the location of the Town Hall's pharmacy. This wing was later rebuilt in Italian Romanesque style, after a citizen's "action group" led by a well known neo-Gothic architect, Conrad Wilhelm Hase, managed to save the entire building from demolition more..

The Castle Marienburg
Edit ThisMarienburg Castle
This romantic castle is situated on a hill near Nordstemmen on the River Leine. King Georg V. of Hannover has it built between 1857 and 1866 as a present to his queen, Marie. The large four-winged structure was begun by Hannoverian architect Hase, who was relieved by Opler in 1864. The style is Neo-Gothic, mainly in shape, not in structure. It was meant to look like a romantic medieval castle. Today it is a museum with a lot of objects from Hannovrian kings and the Welfen. The Marienburg was never completed. The annexation in 1866 stopped the construction works. The Ex-Queen more..

Edit ThisThe Zoo was declared an EXPO-Project called "EXPOnat Hannover Zoo" ("Exhibit Hannover Zoo"), with an entirely new concept of visitors' experience. The new attractions like the Gorilla Mountain, Jungle Palace, Meyers Hof, Sambesi and (in the near future) Arktika, were designed as enclosures (rather than the traditional cages) where the animals can live in conditions similar to their natural habitats.

The Castle of Bückeburg
Edit ThisHere, close to the ancient trading route of the Helweg the Counts of Schaumburg had a castle built in the 14. century. Next to the castle a settlement began to develop which gradually grew to a small town. Little happened before the reign of the most remarkable of the counts of Schaumburg-Lippe, Ernst (1601-22). He made Bückeburg his residence, granted the town the rights of a borough and had a lot of new structures built in the town, new roads, fortifications and buildings. The church with the facade of Early Baroque Style (1612) is unique in Northern Germany. Bückeburg castle more..

Tram Museum
Edit ThisIn Sehnde-Wehmingen, 20 km from Hannover on the grounds of a disused potash mine there is an institution that has been visited by thousands of people within the last few years: the Hannover Tram Museum. As a museum of public transport it is popular not only with Hannoverians. The museum is situated in the old buildings of the mine company and uses the tracks on the grounds, which are the right size for the old trams. A good part of the tracks are "under wire" now, so visitors can go for a ride on an ancient tram. In the exhibition one can find out a lot about trams. The very more..

Kestner Gesellschaft
Edit ThisThe Kestner Gesellschaft was founded in 1916 as a gallery for 20th century art. Banned by the Nazis in 1936, the Kestner Gesellschaft reopened its gallery in the Warmbuechenstrasse in 1948. The Kestner Gesellschaft began to look for a suitable gallery when the old building became too outdated to meet the technical demands of present-day art exhibitions. The Kestner Gesellschaft found the ideal location for its new gallery in the centre of the city in the former Goseriede Public Baths. With the Goseriede, the Kestner Gesellschaft now has a gallery consisting of 5 exhibition halls. more..
