Niederwald-Monument
Edit ThisThe dramatic monument, nearly 38 meters high, built from 1877-1883 according to plans by Johann Schilling of Dresden, is no longer in vogue. It symbolizes the reestablishment of the German Empire after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. The main figure is Germania, holding the imperial crown in her raised right hand and the imperial sword in her left hand. The heights of the Niederwald can be reached via cable car and chairlift from Ruedesheim and Assmannshausen, respectively.

Adlerturm
Edit ThisOn Rheinstrasse, on the bank of the Rhine. Corner tower of the old town fortifications, late Gothic, built in the 15th century. Four storeys, 20.5 meters high, with an inside diameter of 5 meters and walls one meter thick, including the dungeon that was accessible only through a hole at the top of the cellar. Formerly, the tower was situated directly on the Rhine. It was from here, the Adlerturm, that a pole with a flaming basket was mounted to signal the breakup of the ice floes. During the last century, the tower housed an inn called "Zum Adler" (the "eagle"), from which the more..

Church St. Jakobus
Edit ThisCatholic parish church on market square. The church dates from the 14th century and is said to have been built by the knight and crusader Johann Broemser. The half moon and star on the weather vane atop the church tower are a reminder of the days of the crusades. The church was almost completely destroyed in 1944, but was rebuilt of quarried brick typical of the Rhine area. Of special note are the medieval tombstones with effigies of Ruedesheim's nobility, situated in the northern aisle, as well as the Gothic tympanum above the western portal.

Adolf Störzel
Edit ThisWe visited the wine cellars of the above named vintner in August, 2002. We tasted some lovely german wines with a view to buying, although there was no obligaton to buy. Herr Störzel was very knowledgeable about the history of his wines, which had been a family concern for a number of decades. He spoke very good english and had a keen sense of humour to make the visit very enjoyable. I could certainly recommend this cellar as an excellent place to taste the local wines.

Boosenburg / Oberburg
Edit ThisRomanesque keep, next to the Broemserburg. The shape of the building alludes to 9th-century origins. Standing 38 meters high, the tower of the Boosenburg is the town's tallest building. Nestled into these walls, which are up to three meters thick, is a castle-like residence. The entire complex is privately owned and, unfortunately, not open to the public.

Old mansions on Oberstrasse
Edit ThisOn Oberstrasse, there is a row of beautiful old mansions from various periods, including the Frankensteiner Hof, Ritter'scher Hof and Bassenheimer Hof. However, the Broemserhof, constructed from 1542 onward, is doubtlessly the most beautiful of all the noble manors on this street. This former residence of Ruedesheim's ancient Broemser dynasty has an impressive Gothic chapel and an ancestral hall with splendid frescoes. Today, the Broemserhof houses a museum.

Parish and pilgrimage church St. Hildegard
Edit ThisOn the foundations of the original convent dating from 1165 are the parish and pilgrimage church of St. Hildegard as well as the restored east wing of the cloister.
In 1632, during the Thirty Years' War, the Swedes destroyed the monastery of Rupertsberg by fire. Although it was partially torn down, it served as the village church until it was completely ruined by a fire in 1932. One year later it was rebuilt, incorporating some of the earlier elements of style. It houses the St. Hildegard reliquary. Many pilgrims come to Eibingen on the 17th of September, the anniversary of more..

St. Hildegard's Abbey
Edit ThisThe Benedictine convent is situated in the midst of vineyards above the suburb of Eibingen. Built between 1900 and 1904, it is a successor to the convent founded by St. Hildegard of Bingen from 1147-52 on the Rupertsberg near Bingen. The church and its Beuron-style paintings are noteworthy.

Niederwald forest with view points
Edit This"Three heights on the Middle Rhine afford the most extensive views " the Niederwald, Ehrenbreitstein and Drachenfels."
With these words Karl Baedecker (1801-1858) began the 17th chapter (entitled the "Niederwald") of the work for which he became famous, "A Rhine Trip from Basel to Duesseldorf." Landscaped at the end of the 18th century by the Counts of Ostein as an English-style park, complete with artificial ruins, the Niederwald became quite an attraction. The vantage points and ruins are, for the most part, intact to this day. From the Germania monument there is more..

Brömserburg / Niederburg
Edit ThisFrom the early 10th to the early 19th centuries it was the property of the archbishops of Mainz. They converted the old fortress into a residence in the 12th century. Originally, it was right on the bank of the Rhine, surrounded by water. Its more than two-meter-thick walls withstood all offensives. Only the southeastern portion was destroyed by the Duke of Longville. A mine path to the keep bears witness to its invincibility. After being secularized in 1803, the castle had several owners until the town of Ruedesheim purchased it in 1941. Today, it is the home of the vast more..
